My name is Julia Jin, and I will be graduating with a Bachelor’s in Public Health from CSULA at the end of 2023. I plan on applying to graduate school after getting some experience in the field.
During my time at CSULA, two classes that interested me were Public Health Research Methods and Epidemiology. Through those classes, I learned that I enjoyed researching and reporting on Public Health data.
This interest eventually led to me applying to MiOra since I would be able to get real-life experience in research and decide if this is the right path for me. Through MiOra, I had the opportunity to participate in Improving the Awareness and Access to Clinical Trials on Women’s Cancer. While researching the topic, I learned more about significant health inequities and how they affect different people.
Working on this project helped me realize that what I have seen is only a small part of the problem. Throughout the years, I have volunteered at clinics and helped women to get PAP smears and mammograms. So, I always focused on those who get the care rather than those who might not even know where or when to get their annual checkups for different cancers. Working on this project made me more interested in addressing the disparities in access to healthcare among minorities. I hope to utilize what I have learned from my undergraduate studies at CSULA and interning at MiOra to inform more people about what resources they have access to, as well as connect those who need help with the resources available to them.
