YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Enabling Students to Conduct Research and Support Their Communities

- MiOra Interns Educating with KINDness! On August 11, 2018, five MiOra interns—Ayana Arroyo (CSULB), Angela Gomez (CSULB), Michelle Seu (UCI), Daniel Lopez (JHU), and Carlos Garcia (Compton-USD) educated the residents of Compton on HPV, Flu and Meningitis vaccines at the Compton Family Health Fair.

MiOra interns are trained as Community Health Specialists. Interns conduct cutting edge health, policy and STEM research projects. They work remotely on their own time and wherever they are. They learn how to develop surveys, collect and analyze data, do literature research, develop poster and manuscripts. They gain experience in networking and learn how to most effectively connect with experts and potential future professors and employers.

MiOra interns elevate their career trajectory and help others while they are helping themselves. They find their strengths and purpose, and improve the health of their community through scientific discovery, health fairs, community outreach campaigns and policy initiatives. They present their accomplishments at local scientific, public health and quality improvement conferences, and build their communication skills and confidence.

MiOra Alumni Testimonials

From MiOra, I have obtained invaluable, practical experience through community health events, academic conferences, and publications. In fact, from my 2 years at MiOra, I received 2 manuscript publications, one in mental health and the other in STEM education, 2 abstract publications, both in diabetes prevention, and 7 conference poster projects.

These MiOra experiences have been priceless on my personal journey, from aspiring to become a doctor, to being accepted into the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry (Class of 2024, MD). With each MiOra project, I have learned and further developed my personal and professional skills such that I have been able to grow not only as a researcher but also an individual more certain of my health-related passions.

During my time at MiOra, I was fortunate to work alongside a talented and dedicated team of professionals who are truly passionate about public health research and cancer prevention. The internship provided me with invaluable insights into the field and allowed me to apply the knowledge gained during my studies in a real-world setting.

The internship at MiOra has exceeded my expectations and has solidified my passion for public health and cancer prevention. It has been a transformative experience that has equipped me with practical skills, industry insights, and a network of professionals that I can rely on as I pursue my career in this field.

Ruben Balila Lopez

CalStateLA, Public Health, 2023

While at Cal State LA, I was blessed to be an intern at MiOra.  I was able to do research and I was able to learn so much about Multiple Myeloma and the disparities the exist in this disease state. This experience gave me a better understanding of what it takes to do research and it showed me how disparities can have a major impact on populations. I am currently a graduate student at the University of Michigan, and I would like to say that this experience strengthened my passion for public health.
