MiOra’s Community Health Specialist Course equips students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to contribute meaningfully to public health. Through structured, competency-based training, interns engage in health research, data analysis, science communication, and community outreach while working under the mentorship of health professionals and educators.
Our program is fully remote, flexible, and accessible, allowing students to complete training and projects on their own time, while still meeting clearly defined learning outcomes and assessment benchmarks.
Over the past decade, MiOra’s experiential training programs have evolved from a locally based public health initiative into a structured, distance-based experiential learning model with national and international participation. As participation has expanded, MiOra has maintained a single integrated training framework that supports progressive experiential learning in public health, research, and leadership. Participants may enter the program at different stages of their educational or professional development and may advance within the same unified framework based on experience, demonstrated performance, and program needs.
MiOra students are trained as Community Health Specialists. Students conduct cutting edge health, policy and STEM research projects. They work remotely on their own time and wherever they are. They learn how to develop surveys, collect and analyze data, do literature research, develop poster and manuscripts. They gain experience in networking and learn how to most effectively connect with experts and potential future professors and employers.
MiOra students elevate their career trajectory and help others while they are helping themselves. They find their strengths and purpose, and improve the health of their community through scientific discovery, health fairs, community outreach campaigns and policy initiatives. They present their accomplishments at local scientific, public health and quality improvement conferences, and build their communication skills and confidence.
Through the program, students gain practical experience in:

In the realm of remote work, I’ve embraced virtual professionalism and effective time management. Communicating virtually has become second nature to me. These skills are invaluable in today’s digital world. MiOra has also enhanced my overall work efficiency.
Engaging in literature analysis has sharpened my analytical thinking and research. Collaborating on IRB protocol development has opened my eyes to the ethical considerations underlying research, enriching my approach to project planning and execution. Survey distribution and engagement with the community have highlighted the significance of community-driven initiatives and the power of education in creating positive change. Reflecting on my internship with MiOra, I am immensely grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to contribute to meaningful projects and grow both personally and professionally. These experiences have equipped me with a well-rounded skill set that I am eager to apply in future endeavors, and I am excited to continue making a positive impact in the world of Community health.
Thank you MiOra for this transformative journey.
MiOra has greatly enhanced my understanding of and ability to carry out scientific research. I have learned so much from the other students and mentors that I have been surrounded by. Regardless of previous experience, MiOra will find a place for you and help you to succeed at whatever projects you choose to pursue.

While at Cal State LA, I was blessed to be an intern at MiOra. I was able to do research and I was able to learn so much about Multiple Myeloma and the disparities the exist in this disease state. This experience gave me a better understanding of what it takes to do research and it showed me how disparities can have a major impact on populations. I am currently a graduate student at the University of Michigan, and I would like to say that this experience strengthened my passion for public health.
MiOra leadership and interns work with governmental, non-profit and commercial organizations to improve public health. MiOra and partners organize outreach events and online educational experiences. These partnerships create opportunities for MiOra interns to network and gain real-world public-health and research experience.
