MiOra (www.miora.org) organized an amazing Career Event on March 21st at the Kearns High School in Utah. Two esteemed MiOra mentors, Lindsay Andrews, a Registered Labor and Delivery Nurse, and Dede Vilven, an Epidemiologist with a Master’s Degree in Public Health joined the students and talked about their education, professional life style and average salary. They shared the economic difficulties they experienced while growing up, and how they overcame those challenges. MiOra educational nonprofit (www.miora.org) and STEM Academy invited Occupational Therapist (OT) Rashelle Nagata, who is doing her clinical doctorate at the University of Southern California (USC), to provide tips to the students on techniques to lower anxiety and better manage their time. The students complained about escalating stress over school work, grades, work experiences, extracurricular activities and relationships upon entering junior and senior year. The interactive program was very well received. The students said that they really enjoyed the healthy vs. non-healthy comparisons as well as the stretching exercises. MiOra educational nonprofit (www.miora.org) organized a career event at the STEM Academy at Bernstein High School, Hollywood, California, together with the support of the Principal Mr. Paul Hirsch and the Lead Teacher, EL Coordinator & Bio-medical Instructor Ms. Esther Dabagyan. MiOra mentor, Certified Physician Assistant with Ear Nose Throat Specialization, Raquel Vasquez PA-C from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center visited Kid City and gave career guidance to promising high school students Diana Balbuena (junior) and Roxana Flores (senior) from Orthopaedic Medical Magnet HS. The students learned about the educational requirements, salary and the life style of physician assistants. Thank you Ms. Vasquez! Keep up the good work students! MiOra (www.miora.org) welcomes Joshua Gidanian as the newest MiOra Data Manager! Joshua is passionate about being productive and helping people. His volunteer activities have ranged from building shelters for the homeless people in Portland, Oregon to supporting cancer patients in Los Angeles, California. Joshua is now putting that passion and energy into helping high school and college students reach their goals in STEM and healthcare careers. In addition to having an innate ability to build and fix, Joshua is a budding Microsoft Excel specialist. MiOra (www.miora.org) welcomes Leslin Hernandez as a new mentee. MiOra connected Leslin with mentor Wendy Gerber at Immunization Coalition of Los Angeles County. Leslin is now a member at the Vaccine Confidence Committee and the Adolescent Vaccines Committee. She is actively involved in identifying resources for the providers and patients in English and Spanish while gaining real-world experience in public health, pediatrics and preventive medicine. The eldest of 3 daughters, Leslin is a first generation college attendee and an undergraduate at UCSD Pre-Med program. On October 20, 2016 MiOra (www.miora.org) partnered with Kid City to organize a STEM and healthcare career event at their location in downtown Los Angeles. Kid City is a nonprofit community organization that aims to provide a safe and enriching after-school place for high school and college students from Central and South Los Angeles areas. Most of Kid City students are first generation college attendees.
