MiOra Interns Educating With KINDness! Miora | August 19, 2018 On August 11, 2018, five MiOra interns—Ayana Arroyo (CSULB), Angela Gomez (CSULB), Michelle Seu (UCI), Daniel Lopez (JHU), and Carlos Garcia (Compton-USD) educated the residents of Compton on HPV, Flu and Meningitis vaccines at the Compton Family Health Fair. The interns distributed KIND bars, educated the attendees on how to eat healthy, and informed them about the MiOra-Compton Diabetes Prevention Program. 9 MiOra Interns Were Certified By UCLA As Diabetes Prevention Coaches Miora | August 12, 2018 Nine MiOra students were trained by the UCLA Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) on how to lead a CDC-based lifestyle change program in their communities to prevent type2 diabetes. MiOra Students’ Research Paper Has Been Accepted For Publication! Miora | July 25, 2018 A research paper developed by MiOra students Nikhil Chakravarty and Jason Alvarez has been accepted for publication by the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (JDD)! In the paper entitled “UV protection by natural products: C. myrrha oil versus sunscreen” the students compared the sun protective ability of myrrh oil to traditional chemical sunscreens in the laboratory, using a mutant, UV-sensitive strain of the yeast S. cerevisiae. The students found that a combination of myrrh oil and SPF15 sunscreen was more effective than SPF15 sunscreen alone. MiOra, UCLA And Compton Unified School District Partnership: Educating Nine Students Into National C Miora | July 19, 2018 In early August, students who have recently completed the MiOra Diabetes training will be transported to UCLA with Compton School buses and trained over 2 days to receive their Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) certificates; they will then go out into their community to screen and help pre-diabetic people implement life-style changes involving healthy eating, stress reduction, and moderate levels of exercise. MiOra Mentee Nia Wade Connected With Lauren Chi From CDC Miora | July 8, 2018 Lauren graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in May 2016 with a degree in Public Health and got a full-time job through a great CDC program for young public health professionals called Public Health Associates Program (PHAP, next application cycle starts in January 2019). Currently Lauren is working at the LosAngelesCounty Department of Public Health. Nia graduated from Cal State U Long Beach (CSULB), School of Public Health this June and she is interested in a career in global health. Thank you Lauren for mentoring and guiding Nia! MiOra Acknowledges Sergio Jacinto From STEM Academy Of Hollywood Miora | July 2, 2018 Sergio, a recent graduate of STEM Academy of Hollywood, Bernstein HS, is passionate about enhancing his community’s understanding of how to maintain a healthy diet. Sergio’s story is one of true success. Battling with obesity as a child and witnessing his family struggle with diet-related health problems, Sergio wanted to write a different story for himself, so he started to exercise and eat healthy. The STEM classes he took taught Sergio how to compare different diets and access healthy food. Sergio is interested in a career in biomedical engineering with an emphasis on nutrition. Ultimately, he wants to help people live a safer and healthier lifestyle. We are here to support you Sergio!
MiOra Mentees’ Abstract On HPV Immunization Was Selected For A Poster Presentation At The Prestigio Miora | June 24, 2018 Jessica Leyva, Elizabeth Sanchez, Ayana Arroyo, Nia Wade, NgocTuyen Dinh from Cal State U Long Beach interviewed 180 students in the Los Angeles County and found that almost one quarter (24%) of the students have not received the HPV vaccine and nearly half of them (49%) didn’t know that they can get the vaccine through 26 years of age. The mentees then educated the students to improve awareness. Great research to close a gap! We are looking forward to seeing your poster.
