Becoming a mentor

Mentoring is a rewarding experience that allows you to make a real difference in not only someone else’s life but your own as well! In addition to the personal satisfaction of giving back, benefits of mentoring include improved leadership skills, work performance and communication with younger generations. Following are the typical steps to being a mentor.

Register: If you are a professional with more than five years of experience and are associated with a well-recognized company, academic institution or organization, we invite you to register to become a MiOra mentor.

All mentors agree to be cleared of a background check prior to becoming MiOra mentor

Connect with a mentee: The mentee will send you a request, and you will decide whether to accept the request or not. If you accept, click the “Accept” button, which sends a confirmation to the mentee. (If the mentee is younger than 18 years of age, the parent will also be notified. Once the parent approves, you can start communicating with the mentee.)

Communicate with the mentee: MiOra is a distance-mentoring program. You will communicate with your mentee via email, text, telephone, Skype or whatever method is most convenient for both of you.

The first call with your mentee: Help determine the mentee’s interests, strengths and weaknesses. Understand their academic capabilities, and their short- and long-term career goals. Provide the mentee with real-world information on the career path in their field of interest and guidance on the steps to get there.

Create a real-world professional experience (“The Project”): Help the mentee identify a project that can be accomplished with the resources available to them. (MiOra can help with suggestions and assistance.)

Continue communication with the mentee: The mentee should inform you via email about the completion of their weekly assignments. You can set up regular, minimum 30- to 60-minute weekly meetings with the mentee to go over their assignments, learning goals and progress on the project.

Select a platform to present the project: Ask the mentee to identify potential platforms — whether print journals, industry meetings, webinars or other venues — to present the results of their project. This will help them learn the process and think about the impact of their presentation. Provide guidance and help them consider transportation and logistics, cost of submission, target audience, etc.

Help the mentee build a professional network: Ask the mentee to identify and draft an email to an expert in their field of interest who is working on types of projects similar to theirs. The mentee should draft an introductory email to the expert (which you will review) and send the email to the expert with you copied. Follow up with the mentee about the outcome. (You may want to reach out to the expert yourself separately.)
